Ever wondered what Battleplans are and how they work in Age of Sigmar? This guide gives you the lowdown on the free core rules, finding missions (Battleplans), and the different game modes (Open, Narrative, Matched).

The Free Stuff:
- Core rules are free to download!
- These rules include the basics of playing but not specific missions.
Finding Missions (Battleplans):
- Battleplans come from various sources like army books (Battletomes) and supplements.
- General’s Handbook and Season of War: Thondia are the latest sources.
- You can even use Battleplans from older releases.
- Battlepacks are optional rule sets for specific Battleplans from the same source.
Choosing Your Game Mode:
- Open Play: Make up your own rules and Battleplans, perfect for casual games with friends.
- Narrative Play: Great for campaigns or thematic games with a focus on storytelling.
- Matched Play: Use the official rules for a balanced, competitive experience.
Army Size:
- Open and Narrative Play allow you and your opponent to decide on a point limit for your armies (common choices are 1000, 1500, 2000 points).
- Matched Play is typically 2000 points with strict army list building (can’t go over the point limit).
New Player Tips:
- Don’t stress about having everything at the beginning! Play with what you have and learn the core rules first.
- The General’s Handbook is great for Matched Play and has the latest updates, but not essential for casual play.
- Season of War: Thondia is good for all game modes but especially Narrative Play, even including a random Battleplan generator!
